What is a Sober Companion?
Personal Recovery Assistants, known as sober companions, work with clients and their families to establish a daily living plan for continued sobriety and lasting recovery. At Hired Power, our PRAs guide, support, and mentor clients, assisting them as they apply the information first learned in treatment into their new daily lifestyles. Our Personal Recovery Assistants are encouraging and motivating — we positively reinforce healthy choices to build our clients’ confidence. We lead our clients to become active participants in their own lives, not only to survive but to actually thrive in recovery. By identifying potential relapse triggers and barriers, guiding change and noting good choices, sober companions create teachable moments that influence current/future thoughts and behavioral processes.
Along with these deeper benefits, PRAs provide an essential yet simple service: supportive sober companionship. Too often, individuals leaving recovery treatment don’t have someone to rely on to help guide them through their confusing early days of sober life. Sometimes, this responsibility falls on a family member or other loved one who isn’t fully aware of the level of commitment needed, or who isn’t prepared for the pitfalls of life after addiction. While not all individuals need full support after treatment, many that do will fall through the cracks and experience relapse due to a lack of structure and accountability. Hired Power Personal Recovery Assistants are trained and experienced in performing the duties needed to get individuals in recovery started along a lifelong path of sobriety. PRAs relieve the pressure on family members to feel responsible for the well being of their loved one in recovery, and offer reassurance that clients are kept safe and on the right track.
Our professional team also becomes the eyes and ears for each client’s existing doctor, therapist, treatment coordinator or other key members of the recovery team. Personal Recovery Assistants provide daily communication phone calls with updates and additional relevant information so that treatment coordinators can continue to supervise and be involved in their patient’s progress.
No matter what challenges early recovery may hold — be it adjusting to attending designated meetings, returning to work or school or finding a healthy daily routine — our Personal Recovery Assistants are there to guide and accompany our clients throughout the entire process.
Is a Sober Companion Service Right for Me?
Not everyone who goes through recovery treatment for substance abuse will need this level of constant companionship following rehabilitation. PRA services are best for those clients who need continuing support as they return to independent living. Perhaps you have a history of relapse and are seeking a way to break the cycle; perhaps you are easing back into a demanding job or family life or perhaps you have extenuating circumstances that require professional coordination.
Typical needs for Hired Power’s Sober Companion services are:
- Clients who need additional support as they prepare to transition between treatment settings (travel support and rehab transport)
- Clients who need safe passage as they transition between primary and extended care treatment settings
- Clients who need to leave the treatment setting during their stay due to court or family issues
- Clients who need added structure and support while attending an outpatient program
- Clients who have been in recovery for a period of time and desire to further their recovery process
- Clients who are experiencing ongoing legal and court issues
If you or your loved ones are in need of professional help as you navigate your return to independent life, a Personal Recovery Assistant may be the service you need. Reach out to Hired Power to learn more — our expert staff can offer an evaluation to match you with the service that provides the right level of support for you.
